Three-year-old Serenity Mayhew laughed
and skipped as she poured juice for her
mother Friday morning at the "Moms and
Muffins" Mothers Day breakfast at the Ben
Franklin Center.
Serenity's mother, Jennifer, said she
enjoyed the quality time with her children
in the morning before work. And she
mentioned the breakfast was delicious
as well as healthy.
"It's great to be here with my kids,"
Mayhew said. "I'm just hoping to have a
fun-filled day on Sunday. Maybe go to the
park or a museum."
Sunday is Mother's Day.
The first-ever Moms and Muffins breakfast was organized by Family Partners, the social service
department of Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now. The breakfast was held at the Franklin Center and
also Nathaniel Ely School.
"We wanted to get parents involved in the program," said Hannia Williams, lead family outreach worker.
"We have mothers on the policy council here... and we're seeing an increase in activities that get moms
involved."
Carmen Torres had breakfast with her son George before the toddler played games in class. Torres said
while she doesn't have plans for Mothers Day, just spending time with her two children would be enough
of a present.
Mayhew agrees but suspects her children will surprise her with a gift.
"I think they've been calling their aunt to get me something," she said, hugging her son Miles.
Don't expect fathers to be left out of the party. Many accompanied their children to the event. The program
was attended by the primary caretaker in the family which could be a grandmother, father or other relative,
Williams said.
Fathers will also get a celebration of their own on Fathers Day called "Dads and Donuts," to increase
bonding time with all family members.
Most schools don't formally celebrate religious holidays so as to not make students feel left out, Williams
said. But for days that just applaud the work of a loved family member, the celebration was welcomed.
"Anybody can come and enjoy breakfast with their child," she added.
